A Sewage Treatment Plant Specified for Your Property

The right sewage treatment plant depends on more than the size of your property. We assess expected usage, treatment capacity, access, ground conditions and the proposed discharge route before recommending a suitable system.

We then plan the groundwork, pipework, electrical supply and outlet around your site. UKDP manages the installation through to commissioning and sign-off, keeping you informed about access, timescales and reinstatement. Once the work is complete, we explain how your new plant operates and the servicing and emptying it will require.

What UKDP's Sewage Treatment Plant Installation Includes

Every installation is planned around your property, the proposed discharge route and the requirements that apply to the site.

Pre-works site survey

We assess the existing drainage, access, ground conditions, treatment requirements and proposed outlet before confirming the scope of work.

System selection and sizing

We calculate the required capacity and specify a suitable system for the site and discharge route, including WTE and GRAF plants where appropriate.

Planning and compliance checks

We check the General Binding Rules and coordinate Building Regulations approval, planning permission or an Environment Agency permit where required.

Excavation and installation

We complete the excavation and ground preparation, position the plant and connect the pipework and electrical supply ready for commissioning.

Existing system decommissioning

Where a new plant replaces an existing system, we agree how the old tank will be safely emptied and decommissioned within the planned works.

How UKDP Installs Your Sewage Treatment Plant

Your dedicated Project Manager coordinates the work from the first survey to final sign-off. A typical installation takes five to seven working days.

  1. Discuss your requirements

Tell us what you need. We establish the right assessment and gather the necessary information before arranging a site visit.

  2. Survey the site

We inspect the site and existing drainage, then produce a factual report setting out our findings and recommendation.

  3. Review the report and quote

Our technical team talks you through the report, proposed work and quote, including how the price has been calculated.

  4. Plan the installation

If you proceed, we complete a pre-works visit, explain access, disruption and reinstatement, then confirm the contract, deposit and start date.

  5. Complete the installation

Your Project Manager coordinates the work and keeps you informed. Most installations take five to seven working days, depending on project size.

  6. Final checks and sign-off

We complete the final checks and customer sign-off, explain the plant’s maintenance requirements and issue the final invoice.

Compliance Built into Your Installation

Compliance is built into the sewage treatment plant installation before excavation begins. We confirm:

  • The plant is correctly sized for the expected wastewater flow
  • The proposed discharge route meets the applicable General Binding Rules
  • The selected system meets the relevant British Standard
  • Building Regulations approval is in place
  • Planning permission or an Environment Agency permit is obtained where required

UKDP brings these requirements into one clear installation plan. We coordinate the necessary checks and approvals, install the plant to the agreed specification and handle the Building Regulations application, helping protect your property, surrounding land and nearby water.

Your Sewage Treatment Plant Installation Guarantee

Every new sewage treatment plant installation includes a three-year workmanship guarantee from UKDP. Once the work is complete, we check that you are satisfied and ask you to sign off the project. You will then receive a completion pack containing your guarantee.

For longer protection, we can also arrange an optional insurance-backed guarantee through our warranty insurance partner. This is separate from the included UKDP guarantee and is available for an additional fee. We will explain both options clearly, including what each guarantee covers, before you decide whether the extended protection is right for you.

Signs Your Existing System May Need Replacing

Not every drainage problem requires a new treatment plant. We inspect the existing system first and recommend replacement only when its condition, capacity or discharge arrangement justifies it.

Existing System Concern

  • The system is too small for current or planned usage
  • A septic tank discharges directly to surface water
  • Serious tank or pipework damage cannot be repaired
  • The system repeatedly fails to treat wastewater correctly
  • The existing discharge route risks pollution or cannot meet current rules
  • The existing installation lacks the required approvals

How a New Installation Addresses It

  • The new plant is sized for the maximum expected daily wastewater flow
  • A suitable treatment plant and outlet are specified for the applicable discharge rules
  • A new plant and connections are installed to the agreed specification
  • A treatment process is selected around the property’s capacity and discharge requirements
  • The ground or surface-water discharge arrangement is assessed before installation
  • Building Regulations and any necessary planning or environmental approvals are coordinated

Insurance May Cover Your Treatment Plant Replacement

If your existing drainage system suffers sudden or accidental damage, buildings insurance may cover its replacement. Eligibility depends on the cause of the damage, your policy wording and exclusions.

UKDP’s in-house claims team can:

  • Investigate the damage and prepare a factual technical report.
  • Explain the work needed for a suitable replacement.
  • Communicate with your insurer and coordinate the approved installation.
  • Review a declined claim and challenge the decision where there is a valid case.

Where a like-for-like replacement is unsuitable, we can provide evidence explaining why a sewage treatment plant or other upgrade is required. Funding remains subject to the insurer’s approval.

Our claims support is free. You pay only your policy excess.

Sewage Treatment Plant Installation: Frequently Asked Questions

Ask our team

How long does a sewage treatment plant installation take?

A typical UKDP installation takes around five to seven working days. The final programme depends on the size of the project, site access, excavation requirements, ground conditions and the proposed discharge arrangement. We confirm the expected timescale once the survey and pre-works planning have been completed.

How do you choose the right treatment plant and size?

We calculate the required treatment capacity and assess the property’s usage, ground conditions, available space, access, discharge route and servicing requirements. UKDP works with WTE and GRAF systems, but the recommendation is based on what suits the site, not on using one standard plant for every installation.

When should a septic tank be replaced with a sewage treatment plant?

A septic tank that discharges directly to surface water does not meet the General Binding Rules. Depending on the property, the solution may be a public sewer connection, a compliant drainage field or a sewage treatment plant. We assess the existing arrangement before recommending an upgrade.

What approvals are needed for a sewage treatment plant installation?

A new sewage treatment system requires Building Regulations approval, and planning permission may also be needed. An Environment Agency permit is required where the discharge cannot meet the applicable General Binding Rules. The exact requirements depend on the discharge route, volume, location and surrounding environmental conditions.

Does a sewage treatment plant need electricity?

Yes. Unlike a septic tank, a sewage treatment plant uses powered mechanical components to treat wastewater and requires a permanent electrical supply. The exact requirements depend on the manufacturer and model. The power supply forms part of the installation planning and must remain available for the plant to operate correctly.

What happens to the existing tank during replacement?

The approach depends on the type, condition and location of the existing system. It must be emptied and decommissioned safely so that remaining sludge or wastewater cannot cause pollution. We confirm the appropriate method after the site survey and set it out within the agreed installation scope and quotation.

How much does sewage treatment plant installation cost?

There is no reliable standard price because every installation is different. Cost is affected by plant capacity, site access, excavation, ground or groundwater conditions, electrical work, the discharge arrangement, required approvals and reinstatement. Following the assessment, we provide a clear quotation for the recommended system and agreed work.

Can one sewage treatment plant serve multiple properties?

Yes. A shared treatment plant can serve multiple properties if it is sized for their combined maximum wastewater flow and the discharge arrangement meets the applicable rules. Access, electricity, servicing, emptying and repair responsibilities should also be agreed between the property owners before the installation proceeds.
