Sewage Treatment Plant Inspection
Get a clear assessment of your treatment plant’s condition, pipework and discharge arrangement. We complete a detailed inspection and provide a technical-team-reviewed report with practical recommendations.

When is a Treatment Plant Inspection Needed?
A sewage treatment plant can develop problems that are not obvious from ground level. A detailed inspection gives you reliable evidence before making decisions about maintenance, repairs, compliance or a property transaction.
Arrange an inspection when:
- You are buying or selling a property.
- The system has recurring smells, blockages or drainage problems.
- You need to confirm where the treated effluent discharges.
- You are checking for rainwater cross-connections.
- You are considering repair or replacement work.
UKDP checks the accessible upstream and downstream pipework, empties the tank, completes a 360-degree structural survey and examines the outlet. Our technical team reviews the findings before issuing a clear report with practical recommendations.
What's Included in Our Sewage Treatment Plant Inspection Service?
We inspect the plant, accessible pipework and discharge arrangement before our technical team reviews the findings and prepares your report.
Initial site assessment
We review the treatment plant, surrounding drainage and any visible signs of damage or poor operation.
Upstream and downstream checks
Accessible covers are lifted and the connecting pipework is checked to confirm wastewater is flowing clearly.
Tank emptying
The treatment plant is emptied by tanker, allowing the internal structure to be inspected safely and thoroughly.
360-Degree structural survey
We assess the full internal structure for cracks, deterioration, movement and other defects that may require attention.
Outlet and discharge check
The outlet is inspected to establish whether it is functioning and confirm where the treated effluent discharges.
Rainwater connection testing
We dye-test the downpipes to identify rainwater entering the treatment system through an incorrect cross-connection.
What UKDP Customers Say
UKDP have, from my first contact with them, been very helpful, informative and re-assuring even when all hope seemed lost for a favourable outcome. Their in-depth knowledge and sheer determination made our claim possible where I feel sure most companies would have given up!
Thank you all so very much for all your work on my behalf. There is no way it was going to get done without your input. I would recommend you to anyone with similar problems. It's such a relief to have it done. Thanks again.
I cannot fault the tremendous work carried out by UKDP. From start to finish, all involved exhibited a professional, dedicated and high standard of work ethic. They treated my property with the utmost respect.

Review the site
We assess the plant, surrounding drainage, access points and any visible signs of a problem.
Check the pipework
Accessible upstream and downstream covers are lifted to check that the connecting pipework is running clear.
Empty & inspect the tank
The tank is emptied before we complete a full 360-degree assessment of its internal structural condition.
Trace the discharge
We inspect the outlet, establish where it discharges and dye-test downpipes for rainwater cross-connections.
Review & report
Our technical team checks the findings before issuing a clear report with recommendations for any required action.
Other Sewage Treatment Plant Services
If an inspection identifies work that needs attention, UKDP can provide the appropriate emptying, installation or repair service.
Emptying
We remove accumulated sludge to protect the plant’s treatment capacity and help prevent avoidable blockages or overflows.
Learn moreInstallation
We assess the property, specify a correctly sized treatment plant and manage the installation through to commissioning and sign-off.
Learn moreRepairs
We diagnose faults and repair pumps, blowers, diffusers and other components where possible. Retrofit alternatives can be sourced when original parts are unavailable.
Learn moreWhy have Routine Sewage Treatment Plant Inspections?
Routine inspections help establish whether your sewage treatment plant remains structurally sound and its discharge arrangement is working as intended. They can uncover damage, restricted pipework, outlet problems and rainwater cross-connections that may not be visible above ground.
Regular checks can help you:
- Identify deterioration before it becomes more serious.
- Confirm the accessible pipework is running clear.
- Establish where the treated effluent discharges.
- Maintain a factual record of the system’s condition.
- Plan appropriate maintenance or repairs.
The right inspection frequency depends on the plant’s age, condition, usage and any recent problems. UKDP provides clear findings and practical recommendations, so you know what needs attention and what does not.

Technically reviewed reports
Our technical team checks the engineer’s findings before your factual inspection report is issued.
What Can a Sewage Treatment Plant Inspection Clarify?
An inspection does not automatically mean expensive work is needed. It establishes what is happening below ground and gives you factual evidence before deciding what to do next.
Before the Inspection
- Slow or restricted wastewater flow
- Suspected internal damage
- An uncertain discharge point
- Possible rainwater entering the system
- Limited information about the system
- Uncertainty about repairs or replacement
What UKDP Establishes
- Whether the accessible upstream and downstream pipework is running clear
- The tank’s structural condition through a 360-degree internal assessment
- Where the outlet discharges and whether it is functioning
- Whether downpipes are incorrectly connected, using dye testing
- A clear record of the plant, pipework and discharge arrangement
- Technically reviewed findings and proportionate recommendations
Can a Treatment Plant Inspection Support an Insurance Claim?
An inspection provides factual evidence about damage to your sewage treatment plant and connected drainage. This helps your insurer assess the cause, extent and work required.
Your report can document:
- The plant’s structural condition
- Damage to the tank or connected pipework
- Recommendations for repair or replacement
Our technical team checks the report before it is issued. If the findings suggest potentially insured damage, our in-house claims team can review the evidence and policy wording, communicate with your insurer and coordinate approved work.
The inspection is normally paid for by the customer unless UKDP has been appointed by the insurer. An inspection does not guarantee that a claim will be accepted.

Ask our teamHow much does a sewage treatment plant inspection cost?
A UKDP sewage treatment plant inspection costs £399 including VAT. The plant must be emptied so its internal structure can be assessed fully. Any separate tanker charge will be confirmed when the visit is arranged, based on the plant’s size and contents.
Why must the treatment plant be emptied for an inspection?
Emptying exposes the internal walls and components that cannot be examined properly when the plant is full. This allows the engineer to complete a 360-degree structural assessment and identify cracks, movement, deterioration or other damage that may otherwise remain hidden.
Is an inspection the same as routine servicing?
No. Servicing maintains the plant in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. UKDP’s inspection establishes the structural condition of the tank, checks accessible connecting pipework, examines the outlet and discharge arrangement, and looks for rainwater cross-connections. You may need both services at different times.
Can an inspection confirm whether my treatment plant is compliant?
It can identify important concerns involving the plant’s condition, discharge route, pipework and rainwater connections. However, compliance also depends on factors such as discharge volume, location, installation date and permits. UKDP will explain any concerns against the applicable General Binding Rules.
How often should a sewage treatment plant be inspected?
There is no single inspection interval suitable for every plant. Consider its age, condition, usage, maintenance history and any emerging problems. Inspections are also useful before a property transaction. Routine servicing and emptying should continue at the intervals stated by the manufacturer.
Should I arrange an inspection before buying a property?
Yes. An inspection can reveal the plant’s condition, discharge point and potential work before you become responsible for the system. In England, sellers must provide the new operator with written information about the treatment system, discharge arrangement, maintenance requirements and available records under the General Binding Rules.
Can UKDP inspect a treatment plant shared by several properties?
Yes. Tell us how many properties use the plant and who is responsible for it when booking. The engineer will need safe access to the plant and relevant drainage points. Any questions about capacity or alterations can then be considered alongside the inspection findings.
What happens if the inspection finds damage?
The report will explain what was found and whether repair, further investigation or replacement should be considered. UKDP can quote for the necessary work. If the damage may fall within your buildings insurance, we can also provide factual evidence and support the claim, subject to your policy terms.
