Septic Tank Replacement for Failed Systems

A septic tank replacement provides a new, compliant system when the existing tank can no longer operate reliably. UKDP assesses the tank, connected pipework and drainage field to understand the cause of the failure and determine the appropriate replacement.

The new system is designed around the property, ground conditions and expected usage, with the work planned and managed through to completion.

What UKDP’s Septic Tank Replacement Includes

The work is shaped by the condition of the current system, the property’s requirements and what the site can accommodate.

Existing system assessment

UKDP checks the septic tank, connecting drainage and drainage field to establish what has failed and what must be replaced.

Site-specific system design

The new tank is sized and positioned according to wastewater demand, ground conditions, available space and access.

Managed groundworks and reinstatement

UKDP plans excavation, site access and any agreed reinstatement before installation begins.

Permanent tank decommissioning

The old tank is taken out of service and backfilled as part of every replacement project.

Drainage field requirements

The existing drainage field is assessed, with a new one incorporated where the proposed system requires it.

Handover and protection

The completed system is checked and handed over with the relevant documents and a three-year workmanship guarantee. An optional insurance-backed guarantee is available separately.

I would like to thank you regarding the claim you handled for me regarding my Septic Tank. You kept me fully informed of progress with my Insurance Company. The replacement tank was installed last month. I am so relieved that the work is now complete. I would be grateful if you could also pass on my thanks to Kevin. I think he attended three times and he was always very professional and reassuring.

How UKDP Replaces Your Septic Tank

A dedicated UKDP Project Manager coordinates the replacement from the initial assessment through to final handover, keeping you informed at each stage.

  1. Free site assessment

We inspect the existing septic tank, connected drainage and drainage field, along with the ground conditions, access and available space.

  2. Replacement system design

Our technical team plans the tank capacity, position, pipework and any drainage field requirements identified during the assessment.

  3. Quotation and approvals

You receive a clear quotation for the proposed work. UKDP also establishes which permits, planning requirements or Building Regulations approvals apply.

  4. Pre-works planning

Before installation, we confirm access, likely disruption, reinstatement arrangements and the practical requirements for completing the work.

  5. Installation and decommissioning

The replacement system is installed and connected. The old septic tank is permanently decommissioned by backfilling as part of the project.

  6. Inspection and handover

The completed work is checked with you before sign-off. UKDP then provides the relevant completion documents and guarantee information.

UKDP's Other Septic Tank Services

UKDP also provides ongoing maintenance, inspections and other septic tank services for properties with off-mains drainage.

Emptying

Scheduled emptying removes accumulated sludge and waste, helping the tank retain its working capacity and reducing the risk of preventable problems.

Inspection

An inspection checks the tank, its visible components and connected drainage to identify defects, compliance concerns and signs of system failure.

Repairs

Some localised faults, such as damage around the tank neck or covers, can be repaired. UKDP first determines whether a lasting repair is technically viable.

Septic Tank Replacement Cost

A septic tank replacement typically costs between £10,000 and £12,000. This is the same expected range as a new septic tank installation.

The final quotation depends on the tank size, ground conditions, site access and whether a new drainage field is required. For example, restricted machinery access, the removal of fences or a long route across a field can increase the work involved.

UKDP uses a national schedule of rates, so the property’s location does not change the price. A site assessment is required to confirm the system and work needed.

Why Choose UKDP for Your Septic Tank Replacement

Established in 2009, UKDP combines off-mains drainage expertise with factual advice, compliance support and nationwide delivery.

Off-mains drainage specialists

We assess the septic tank, connecting pipework and drainage field together, so the replacement addresses the wider system rather than the tank alone.

Clear, factual recommendations

Our advice is based on what the site and system require. We explain the findings, proposed work and quotation before you decide whether to proceed.

Compliance support

UKDP identifies the General Binding Rules, permits, planning requirements and Building Regulations approvals that apply to the replacement.

Insurance claim expertise

Where the failure may be covered by your policy, our in-house claims team can check eligibility and support a valid claim.

£15 million Professional Indemnity cover

Our technical advice and system recommendations are backed by professional indemnity insurance of £15 million.

Dedicated project management

A UKDP Project Manager coordinates the work and keeps you informed from the initial assessment through to completion.

Signs of Septic Tank Failure

Problems can appear inside the property, around the tank or across the drainage field. A site assessment establishes whether the cause can be addressed locally or requires the system to be replaced.

Failing or Non-Compliant System

  • Slow drains or gurgling pipework
  • Persistent sewage smells
  • Wet or unusually lush ground
  • Effluent surfacing above the drainage field
  • A cracked, leaking or structurally failed tank
  • An unsuitable or non-compliant arrangement

After a UKDP Replacement

  • Drainage designed to carry wastewater effectively
  • Wastewater contained within the new system
  • Discharge arrangements suited to the site
  • Wastewater dispersing below ground as designed
  • A correctly sized new septic tank
  • A system designed around current requirements

Insurance May Cover an Eligible Septic Tank Replacement

Some septic tank replacements can be covered by buildings insurance where the failure results from sudden, unexpected damage included within the policy. Gradual deterioration, poor maintenance and pre-existing faults are less likely to qualify.

UKDP’s in-house claims team can review the circumstances, investigate the damage and check whether there is a valid basis for a claim.

Where cover applies, we can present the supporting evidence, communicate with your insurer and coordinate the replacement work.

Septic Tank Replacement: Frequently Asked Questions

Ask our team

Can the final quotation change after the site visit?

Yes. The £10,000-£12,000 range is a realistic guide, but the site visit establishes the actual work required. UKDP assesses the existing system, tank capacity, ground conditions, access and drainage field. The quotation is then based on the replacement designed for the property rather than a standard installation price.

What access problems can affect a septic tank replacement?

UKDP considers how excavation equipment, materials and the replacement tank will reach the installation area. The work can become more involved if fences must be removed, access is narrow or the site is several hundred metres across a field and requires track mats. These requirements are identified and discussed before the installation begins.

Why are structural septic tank repairs rarely recommended?

Older tanks are commonly brick-built or made from fibreglass. Once these structures have failed, a lasting repair can be difficult to complete and guarantee. Damage may also have allowed solids or untreated wastewater to affect the drainage field. UKDP only recommends repair where the defect is limited and a reliable repair is technically possible.

Which parts of a septic tank can sometimes be repaired?

Repairs are generally limited to accessible areas such as the tank neck or covers. Whether repair is possible depends on the location and extent of the damage. Failure affecting the main structure, internal components or drainage field usually requires a wider solution. UKDP investigates the defect before recommending repair or replacement.

What if the septic tank failure has damaged the drainage field?

A damaged baffle, dip pipe or tank can allow solid waste to enter the drainage field. Once the surrounding soil has become blocked, replacing the tank alone may not restore the system. UKDP assesses the tank and drainage field together and includes a new drainage field in the design where one is required.

Is the guarantee the same as the tank manufacturer’s warranty?

No. UKDP’s three-year guarantee covers its workmanship. The tank and any fitted components may also carry separate manufacturer warranties with their own terms. Customers can choose an optional insurance-backed guarantee for an additional fee. The relevant guarantee information is provided as part of the project handover.

Will UKDP tell me if a sewage treatment plant is more suitable?

Yes. UKDP assesses the property and recommends the system that suits the site and applicable requirements. A direct septic tank replacement is not assumed to be suitable in every case. If the discharge arrangement, ground conditions or compliance requirements point to a sewage treatment plant instead, the available solution will be explained before work proceeds.
